How to restore files from a backup

A backup file stores multiple files or entire data of a computer drive. These files can be used to restore original files and folders after reformatting of Windows drives. These backup files can get corrupt, damaged or inaccessible due to numerous unseen reasons such as unexpected system shutdown, virus attacks, Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC) errors, deleted Windows partitions, backup interruptions, physical damage to storage devices, hardware failure, incomplete backup process, system corruption, missing catalog files, unrecognized media errors, unexpected power outage, and so on.

Some of the error messages generated by corrupt backup files while trying to recover data from them:
  • “Fails to open file”.
  • “The backup file is unusable (unrecognized media)”.

Here are some of the tips in order to restore lost, damaged or accidentally-deleted backup files using Windows. Follow the steps given below to restore files from a backup (applicable to Windows 7):
  1. Click Start > Control Panel > System and Maintenance > Backup and Restore.
  2. To restore your files, click Restore my files.
  3. To restore all users’ files, click Restore all users’ files. Type the administrator password or provide confirmation (if prompted).
  4. Click Browse for files or Browse for folders to browse the contents of the backup. The Browse for folders option doesn’t let you to see individual files in a folder. On the contrary, the Browse for files option lets users to view individual files in a folder.
  5. To search the contents of the backup, type all or part of the file name and then click Search.
Note: While searching for files or folders in a specific user account, type location of file or folder in the Search for box that leads to improvement in the search results. User can even use wildcard characters, such as *.doc to search all backed-up DOC files.

Steps to restore files from a backup created on another computer (running Windows Vista or 7):
  1. Click Start > Control Panel > System and Maintenance > Backup and Restore.
  2. Click Select another backup to restore files from, and then follow the on-screen instructions. Type the administrator password or provide confirmation (if prompted).
Steps to find files restored from a backup made on another computer:
While restoring files from a backup created on another computer, the files get restored in a folder under the username used to create the backup. In case usernames are different, user needs to navigate to the folder where the files are restored.
  1. Click Start > Computer.
  2. Double-click the icon of drive where files are saved.
  3. Double-click the Users folder. A folder for each user account is displayed.
  4. Double-click the folder for the username used to create the backup. The restored files will be in various folders based on their original location.
